4th of July Monster Cookies
The first time I made these 4th of July Monster Cookies was after realizing I had three different bags of baking mix-ins sitting in my pantry that needed to be used. Instead of making separate batches of cookies, I threw everything into one bowl and added red, white, and blue candies for a patriotic twist.
They looked a little over-the-top coming out of the oven, but they were the first dessert tray to empty at the cookout. Now they’re one of the recipes I make every summer.
Why This Recipe Works
Here’s the thing about monster cookies: they’re supposed to be packed with stuff. Between the oats, peanut butter, chocolate chips, and candy pieces, every bite is different.
What I figured out is that using patriotic-colored candies instantly makes them party-ready without changing the recipe itself. They’re soft in the center, slightly chewy around the edges, and sturdy enough to travel to picnics and backyard gatherings.
Ingredient Notes
Old-fashioned oats give these cookies their classic chewy texture. Quick oats work in a pinch, but the texture won’t be quite the same.
I use creamy peanut butter because it blends smoothly into the dough. Natural peanut butter can sometimes make the cookies spread unpredictably.
For the patriotic colors, I like using red, white, and blue candy-coated chocolates, but patriotic sprinkles work too.
Patriotic Color Guide (Red, White, Blue Theme)
For patriotic desserts, I keep the colors simple and easy to recognize.
Red ingredients:
Strawberries, raspberries, cherries, red candy pieces
White ingredients:
White chocolate chips, marshmallows, vanilla frosting, white candy pieces
Blue ingredients:
Blueberries, blue sprinkles, blue candy pieces
I’ve found that keeping the colors visible on top of the cookies makes a huge difference in photos and presentation.
How to Make It
Start by creaming together the butter, peanut butter, and sugars until everything looks smooth and combined. Add the eggs and vanilla, then mix again until the batter lightens slightly.
In a separate bowl, combine the dry ingredients and oats. Gradually mix them into the wet ingredients until a thick dough forms. Fold in the chocolate chips and patriotic candies last so they don’t break apart.
Scoop large portions of dough onto baking sheets and gently press a few extra candies on top before baking. That’s the trick that makes them look bakery-style after they come out of the oven.
Bake until the edges are set but the centers still look slightly underdone. They’ll continue cooking on the baking sheet as they cool.
Things I Learned the Hard Way
Don’t overbake these. The centers should look a little soft when you pull them out.
If your dough feels sticky, chill it for 20 minutes before baking.
Adding extra candies on top before baking makes the cookies look much better than relying on what’s hidden inside the dough.
Storage & Serving Suggestions
Store the cookies in an airtight container for up to 5 days. They stay soft surprisingly well.
I usually serve them alongside fresh fruit and lemonade at summer gatherings. They’re also great for packing into treat bags for holiday parties.
